Level, shady campground overlooking surprise creek in Bladensburg National Park with drop toilet only.
Over the years, I've noticed a subtle reduction in the number of accessible campsites at the Waterhole on Surprise Creek.
This campground is accessed via the Route of River Gums, taking the Winton Jundah Road South-west from Winton for some 8km of bitumen road. Then, follow the signs turning South on an outback road to the information shed on entry to the NP.
This used to be self-registration, but those facilities are no longer there, which makes an impromptu, unplanned overnight camp problematic, especially where there is no mobile or Internet coverage, and no staff at the "Ranger"-based Homestead. Cost-cutting indeed!
The NP offers access to Scammy Lookout and Bladensburg Homestead, which has some historical interest, and worth a browse. The campgrounds are level and shady, overlooking the Creek. Makes for a comfortable overnight camp.
Be prepared for late arrivals searching for a campsite, only to leave if no sites are available.
There is one drop toilet close to the campground, but there are no other facilities, or water. Usual NP rules apply re campfires, pets, rubbish, and gennies. Self-sufficiency required.

Take the Winton-Jundah Road South-west out of Winton. Road signs will indicate if you're going the right way! Follow for about 8km, passing the Long Waterhole camp area on the way. On entering the NP, follow the Route of the River Gums South to the Bough Shed Waterhole campsites. The toilet shed will be on your right (on the way in). Avoid the bollards, and select your site by Surprise Creek.
