If you ever wondered where the 1960s Beach Bums disappeared to, you can find them here at this beachside shanty town!
About half a kilometre southwards from "The Blowholes" lookout, a long-established (Depression era?) shanty town developed, and for decades has hosted summer beach shacks for Carnarvon residents, and even some permanents.
Not that long ago, the local Council brought the community there into line and demanded the payment of rates (for the access road & etc.), and also insisted on the public access to the beach and campgrounds.
There is absolutely no water available at the campground-- even the toilet at the Blowholes rest area has had its supply deliberately poisoned to prevent it being siphoned dry. However the small community of long-term residents make regular arrangements for water and food supply runs to Carnarvon, so let the Ranger know if you're running out of anything important.
You _will_ also need to have a portable toilet before you will be allowed to stay. Again, the ever-helpful Ranger does a pottie-run, and collects the porta-loos with the ATV and takes care of them up at the dump-point near the entrance.
About the fishing: the rocky outcrop at the north of the campground and for about half a kilometre surrounding it is a Marine Preserve, and only the taking of Squid or Oysters is allowed. Further out, you can fish like crazy-- however the area has had several fatalities because of King Waves.
With a good external antenna, you might be able to get Telstra mobile reception.
Another must-do at Quobba is snorkling the coral reef! This place is perfect for those of us who can't afford Exmouth!
