Remote and pleasant bush camping, with no facilities, at its best.

The two major billabongs are Lake Francis and Lake Canellan which are both seasonal, and part of the Georgina River system. Not suitable during the "wet", and when the Georgina is rising (quickly). You could find yourself stranded, or worse, for longer than planned.

There is a well-stocked store/Post Office, and a BP Garage, as well as other services in the Town.

If interested in our pioneering driving history, take the seasonal Memorabilia Tour at Drover's Camp Association located on the Barkly Highway on the way into Camooweal from the East. See website for details. And yes, I am a member.

The Lakes are a shortish distance West of Camooweal along the Barkly Highway. Just after the bridge, you will see major dirt tracks heading South, parallel to the Georgina.

Collect firewood, if needed, en route.

Lake Francis is the first "billabong" with many shady sites along its western bank. Starting about 1km on a dirt track from the Highway, tracks to the River/Lake are obvious, and the choice is yours, normally.

Further South, about the 2km mark and just past a steel fenced cattle yard structure, you will find tracks into the second "billabong", named Lake Canellan on the maps. Again, choice of a site is yours.

Both Lakes, depending on the season, have a scattering of lilies (true!) predominantly on the eastern banks. Both campgrounds offer a range and variety of shady campsites. There are no facilities, and the only water is River water, of unknown quality. I have seen, on a number of trips to Camooweal, evidence of feral pigs rooting around the foreshores, digging up a delicacy - fresh water mussels. I suspect lilie flowers and bulbs are also on their diet. Watch out for your food and food scraps!

Yet to catch a fish there (Yellowbelly) but that won't stop me having a go!
