About Kinglake National Park

Under an hours drive from Melbourne with excellent camping, picnic areas, and walking trails, Kingslake National Park is a city dwellers nature escape for Mebournians.

Picnic Areas

The views from Mount Sugar Loaf lookout are spectacular and you can see Melbourne in the distance.

Frank Thomas Reserve also offers excellent views which you can take in while cooking your steak on the gas barbecues.

Mason and Wombelano Falls picnic areas make excellent spots to visit for a picnic and a bit of bushwalking.

This area suffered devestating fires in 2009, however is starting to recover.

As part of the fire recovery, Bowden Mountain Bike Area was born in 2012 with a 2km downhill (experts only) run that is becoming extremely popular.

Flora and Fauna

As the park recovers from the major bush fires, a number of plants and animals are making a comeback. The park is mainly made up of eucalypt woodland which is home to over 40 types of mammals, 90 bird species and hundreds of native plant species.

Grass Trees are abundant, and these hardy plants often fork (split into two branches) after fires (although don't expect itto happen tommorow, these plants can live for hundreds of years and grow very slowely.

Lyrebirds are also often seen on the short walks from the picnic areas. These birds are excellent mimics, so don't be fooled. That camera click you heard might not be "just another tourist", but a lyrebird.
