This free campground gives access to the Cockburn River near Kootingal (about 30km northeast from Tamworth) and is an OK place for an overnight on your way through to somewhere more attractive.

It is set in native bush and is wide and grassy so is fine for a tent. The main camping area has a sheltered picnic table and long drop toilet. There is a small water tank off the shelter, but it is in pretty average condition, so I wouldn't rely on it for drinking water.

Access to the river from the main camping area is a little difficult as over the years, floods have moved the main water area further away from camp. You need to bush bash through weeds if you head straight to the river from here.

If you follow the track that heads south along the river, there is a steep and rutted track that leads down to the river where you can camp on the river pebbles next to a slightly deeper section of the creek. This would be the best way to access the river from the main campground too and is only a short walk up the track.

Fishing

Red Fin and perch are target species along this stretch but, in the warmer months, this area is plagued by weeds, and the thistles and Biden (Farmers Friend) can make access to the river a pain. There are a couple of spots towards Kootingal where you can drive down to the river as well. The water in the creek tends to have a fair bit of algae (thanks to all the nutrients from cattle grazing in the area) so is probably not a great swimming spot.
