A NPWS-maintained campground that`s possibly the cheapest place to stay a night near Byron Bay...
The campground is a few kilometres of narrow unsealed road past the Minyon Falls, in the Whian Whian State Conservation area. It's a fairly large camping clearing, with walk-in tent and vehicle-based camping sites. (Be careful with tents-- there are huge pine trees around the grounds that regularly drop mace-ball sized cones from very high-up.)
You must bring in your own firewood, as there\'s only living habitat vegetation in the area. Because of the large number of schoolies who expect they must have a large bonfire JUST LIKE ON TEEVEE I\'VE GOT THE GIRLFRIEND AND A GUITAR OMG WE\'RE REAL CAMPERS NOW fueled by chopping down the surrounding plantlife, the rangers are soon to make open fires illegal here. The nearby stream is slow-flowing and not suitable for drinking.
There\'s a large communal cooking area, drop toilets, gas BBQs, tables.
If staying for a while, there\'s several hiking trails around the Whian and Nightcap regions, and a lot of native wildlife makes it presence known at night, so bring a torch-- Koalas especially!
