Two large circuits surround grassed parks located on a wide, gravelly, forested ridge.
Reasonable shade provided by mature Stringybark - Messmate and Brown - with an understory of wattles.
Pleasant in spring, dry brown by late summer. BBQs and tables are remote from generally small, short, level parking bays.
Rated 4.1/5
To the west the volcanic strata is covered by windblown acidic sand, promoting rich heathland, at its best in spring.
Kangaroo, wallaby and echidna are common, as are emu, wedge-tailed eagle, blue wren, willie wagtail and kookaburra.
The site of the districts first sawn timber, the hand sawpit has been preserved and signposted.
An easy 15 minute walk through Messmate leads to the edge of the ridge and Whalers Lookout for views over Portland Bay (and whales).
Volcanic Mount Clay (189m) is located to the east, about 5.5k (by road) off Tower Rd. The commercialized beach and riverside camping reserve at Narrawong has an endless supply of hot water (artesian).
