The Watagan, Olney, Heaton State Forests and Watagan National Park offer a huge area of recreational opportunities for the camper, 4wder or nature lover within a stones throw of Newcastle.

There are numerous 4wd trails, nice camping sites and some excellent views from the many high ridges along the trails.

This state forest is also popular with the trail bikers and mountain bikers.
